[etichetta_label tipo=”erogato”]School of the 4th District, Piacenza

[etichetta_label tipo=”realizzato”]2018

The project was carried out by the Piacenza Comics Cultural Association which, starting from simple and instinctive exercises, progressively led the children to acquire specific knowledge of comic drawing, enabling them to create a real comic book. This comic narrated the Battle of the Trebbia in 218 BC, fought by the Roman army against Hannibal during the Second Punic War, shortly after the founding of the city of Piacenza.

Project delivery method

The project took place during regular school hours, from November 9, 2017, to February 15, 2018, with a total of 7 two-hour sessions in each class, for a total of 42 hours.

The lessons were conducted by experts Franco Garioni and Fabrizio Quartieri from the Piacenza Comics Cultural Association. The program began with simple and instinctive exercises, gradually leading the children to acquire knowledge of various drawing techniques and to experiment with more complex activities related to character development, places, and the depiction of settings and environments in the story.

The following topics were specifically covered:

  • the language of comics: how characters speak and perform;
  • drawing: breaking down into geometric shapes;
  • framing and layout structure of the comic page;
  • technical tests: pencil, watercolors, and inks;
  • telling a story: the subject and the script;
  • pencil drawing of individual panels;
  • inking, coloring, and shading.

The topic of the Battle of the Trebbia in 218 BC, fought by the Roman army against Hannibal during the Second Punic War shortly after the founding of the city of Piacenza, was explored in depth. To this end, it was important to help the students understand the value of documentation and source research in order to create the most accurate possible reproduction from both a scenographic and historical perspective.

Disciplinary objectives

In pursuing the objectives set by the project, the main goal was to develop transversal skills, specifically in:

  • classify the different formats of comic “texts” (panel, strip, page…);
  • identify the defining traits of characters and express them through drawing;
  • write a script and create dialogues;
  • produce a comic respecting its structural and formal characteristics (panels, strips, dialogues, onomatopoeic words, captions).

Methods used

  • cooperative learning, to promote positive interdependence and interaction among students;
  • scaffolding by more experienced classmates;
  • peer tutoring;
  • hands-on learning

Project beneficiaries

The students of the three full-time fifth-grade classes of the “Due Giugno” primary school, totaling 58 children.

Final result

As a final outcome, the children produced a comic book which was printed in 1,000 color copies, 16 pages long, in the 17×24 cm format.

Educators' evaluation

The project proposed by Piacenza Comics allowed the children to discover the history of their city through comics: a valuable and engaging tool for facilitating learning because it uses a language that is particularly effective and aligned with the communication styles of young people.

Moreover, this workshop gave all students, including those facing difficulties, the opportunity to express their creativity, support their need for self-esteem, and work collaboratively in groups. By focusing on the emotional dimension of the children, this learning experience contributed to promoting their well-being at school.
