The project, through the production of an English-language musical inspired by the traditional fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood”, aimed to promote and enhance the use of the English language by engaging the children in a concrete and motivating task that involved multiple dimensions of the learning experience: cognitive, emotional, sensory, and socio-affective.

Project delivery method

The project took place outside regular school hours, from February to June 2016, every Monday from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, for a total of 10 sessions lasting 20 hours altogether. It initially engaged the students in dramatizing simple English dialogues taken from easy narrative texts belonging to the fairy tale tradition, appropriately adapted by the English teacher to the children’s language proficiency level.

The lead teachers, in agreement with colleagues from the various teams involved, also used some after-lunch hours to help students practice acting and memorize songs and dances.

Although carried out outside regular school hours, the project was integrated into the curricular planning of the IV Circolo of Piacenza through the acquisition of linguistic content and communicative structures included in the third-grade teaching program.

Disciplinary objectives

In pursuing the objectives set by the project, the main goal was to develop transversal skills, specifically in:

  • Interact, discuss, share ideas and suggestions, collaborate, manage conflicts and emotions.
  • Improve children’s oral communication skills in English by expanding their vocabulary and basic language structures.
  • Help students communicate more spontaneously and fluently in English, facilitating their overcoming of shyness and inhibitions.
  • Increase students’ intercultural awareness.

Methods used

Project beneficiaries

16 students from the third grades (sections A/B/C/D) of the “2 Giugno” primary school.

Final result

The course culminated in a final performance held at the amphitheater of the Caduti sul Lavoro school complex in Piacenza at the end of the school year. Parents and students from all the third grades of the “2 Giugno” school were invited, along with Principal Simona Favari.

The final performance was preceded by the screening of a video documentary about the various phases of the project, produced by Engineer Costantino Palladino, to illustrate the educational and pedagogical objectives of the project to the audience.

Educators' evaluation

The students demonstrated confidence and proficiency in English communication through the dialogues, as well as fluency and expressiveness in acting, thanks in part to the internalization of the expert Samantha Oldani’s guidance.

During the various rehearsals, they showed initiative and resourcefulness, actively participating in the workshops with ideas and suggestions regarding dialogue lines, choreography, and the script. The more introverted and shy children gradually gained increasing confidence, which helped them overcome their initial fears and hesitations about acting and communicating in English.

The teachers observed that the group work strengthened the students’ sense of belonging and their identification with a cohesive group, united in cultural diversity and the ethnic-geographical differences represented by the children in the theater workshop. The children supported and encouraged each other and collaborated actively to achieve a common goal: the final performance. They welcomed the various suggestions from the lead teachers and the expert, making them their own and enriching them with personal contributions.

In conclusion, the teachers emphasize the pedagogical importance of the experience, which allowed the children involved to enhance their oral communication skills in English, to promote and develop their bodily and emotional self-awareness, and to strengthen their social and prosocial abilities. This aligns with the educational goals characterizing the pedagogical framework of the IV Circolo, which identifies key citizenship competencies as the ultimate aim of the school district’s educational project.

At the conclusion of this experience, the lead teachers believe they can affirm that the specific and cross-disciplinary goals and objectives of the project have been fully achieved.
