Project delivery method

The project took place outside regular school hours, from January 25, 2017, to May 26, 2017, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM, twice a week, for a total duration of 45 hours. The initially planned 35 hours had to be extended by 10 hours to allow the teachers to fully complete the educational program.

Due to the number of students, teachers Russo and Stagno conducted the class together, supported by technological tools such as specific software programs and the Interactive Whiteboard.

In carrying out the teaching activities, various methodologies were employed, including the communicative functional approach, with extensive use of role-play activities, flashcards, and language games aimed at acquiring and consolidating linguistic structures and vocabulary. Linguistic reflection was encouraged through oral and written exercises, also using the textbook “Fun For Starters”. Group and pair activities were also conducted, aimed at strengthening social skills and key citizenship competencies.

The content of the teaching activities and ongoing assessments were designed in accordance with the final exam, following the official program established by the Cambridge English Language Assessment.

Disciplinary objectives

In pursuing the objectives set by the project, the main goal was to develop transversal skills, specifically in:

  • To develop and enhance students’ language skills in listening comprehension, speaking, and reading comprehension, according to the objectives of the A1 level of the European Framework.
  • To develop intercultural awareness.
  • To enable students to become familiar with assessment methods and types of tests required by institutions authorized to issue a European certification.

Methods used

Project beneficiaries

33 students from the fourth and fifth grades of the “2 Giugno” primary school.

Final result

At the end of the educational program, 13 children applied to take the exam for the Pre-A1 certification, according to the European Framework.

The evaluation of the test results showed that all the children involved achieved a good overall level of competence in the English language. Everyone approached the exam calmly, demonstrating confidence in their abilities. All of them obtained the final certificate.

Even the students who did not take the certification exam showed improvement in their language skills related to listening and reading comprehension, as well as oral communication.

Educators' evaluation

The teachers observed greater fluency in oral expression, more confident and aware participation in classroom conversations, and an increased number of spontaneous interventions during peer conversations in daily school routines and interactions during playtime.

The teachers also emphasize the positive impact of this experience in developing greater intercultural awareness in the children, helping them become accustomed to interacting with examiners from European institutions and affirming their identity as European citizens.

Ultimately, beyond the specifically linguistic and communicative skills, this experience enriched the students’ cultural background by enhancing their civic and citizenship competencies, which represent the overarching goal of the school district’s project.

2018

The project was carried out by the Piacenza Comics Cultural Association which, starting from simple and instinctive exercises, progressively led the children to acquire specific knowledge of comic drawing, enabling them to create a real comic book. This comic narrated the Battle of the Trebbia in 218 BC, fought by the Roman army against Hannibal during the Second Punic War, shortly after the founding of the city of Piacenza.

2016

The project, through the production of an English-language musical inspired by the traditional fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood”, aimed to promote and enhance the use of the English language by engaging the children in a concrete and motivating task that involved multiple dimensions of the learning experience: cognitive, emotional, sensory, and socio-affective.
