Project delivery method

The project took place during regular school hours, from February to the end of May 2022, and employed as working methods class discussions, brainstorming, dialogic lessons, problem-based learning, cooperative approaches, and the experimental method.
The project also involved an expert who conducted two sessions in each class during regular school hours, in addition to the activities carried out by the classroom teachers during school hours.

Disciplinary objectives

To promote the acquisition by students of knowledge and good practices regarding the relationship between food and the environment, so as to lay the foundation for building together a more sustainable future for the Planet and all its inhabitants.

Methods used

The topic of food has many facets; after an initial analysis activity, the decision was made to explore certain aspects that are more relatable to children, such as:

  • plants in human nutrition
  • the food pyramid
  • sustainable agriculture that respects natural resources
  • soil fertility
  • biodiversity
  • agriculture free of polluting chemicals

As an added value, the project was included in a broader interdisciplinary program at the school district level (involving all third-grade classes), which includes the creation of a small garden area in the schoolyard.

Project beneficiaries

Final result

Among the project’s outcomes, a booklet was produced featuring a story illustrated by the children. It was printed in 90 copies, 12 pages long, in the 23×16 cm format.

The final assessment was a real-world task in which the children were invited to design and create “The Gnam-Gnam Game,” modeled after “The Game of the Goose.”

Here are some comments from the students at the end of the project.

The project was carried out by the Piacenza Comics Cultural Association which, starting from simple and instinctive exercises, progressively led the children to acquire specific knowledge of comic drawing, enabling them to create a real comic book. This comic narrated the Battle of the Trebbia in 218 BC, fought by the Roman army against Hannibal during the Second Punic War, shortly after the founding of the city of Piacenza.
